Seagull’s have been receiving negative press in Dublin recently due to a popular beach having contaminated and poor quality water levels
Merrion Strand Beach, just south of the Irish Capital has long been regarded as a tourist hotspot, but new claims by Ireland’s Environmental protection agency lay the blame with seagulls for the recent decline in water quality. An increase in seagull droppings that have caused the water to become overly contaminated could apparently have been a significant factor in the poor water quality. Pete Webster a respected Senior Scientist at the EPA has the following to say about the water quality: “We have a possible combination of impacts from surface waters but also from an increasing number of seagull droppings on a daily basis,” he told Newstalk Radio following the release of the agency’s annual report into bathing water quality on Tuesday. “Seagull poo has 10 times more bacteria than human poo.
Once again this example shows how uncontrolled sea gull breeding can cause havoc in populated tourist areas where breeding management programmes have not been put in place.
